Viewing Videos with Maps
Once you have upload your video and other imagery to Survae, you're ready to start viewing and working with it.
How the Video is Connected to the Map
- The blue icon on the map indicates the position of the camera. The icon also displays the direction in which the camera is pointed.
- For all moving imagery, such as a video or infrared, the route of the device will appear on the map as a red line, whether aerial, ground or water-based. If the imagery is stationary, you'll see just a blue icon
- You can mouse over any point along the red line to see geo-located, time and date stamped thumbnails for the route. You can start playing the video at any point along the route, as well, and easily move forward or backwards.
- Clicking on a different spot along the path moves the marker there and skips the video to that spot, as well. In other words, you can use the map to control the video (rather than fast forwarding or rewinding the video itself).
Map Functionality and Tools
To change the map or to add a layer, just click on the Stack icon in the upper right corner of the map. You will see two options when you click on this icon, one for Maps and one for Layers. With the Maps tab, you can change the base map to a wide selection of Esri ArcGIS 2D and 3D maps or Google maps. If your account includes additional maps beyond the base selection, you'll see them displayed here. The Layers tab is where you can bring in your own Esri shapefiles, KML and KMZ files and then select them as layers to provide additional context for your imagery.
Working with KML, KMZ and Shapefiles
To bring in Esri shapefiles, or KML and KMZ files, first be sure you are logged in to your account. Once you are logged in, you can drag-and-drop these files into your account and you will see them in the list of available files when you open the Layers tab. From the Layers tab you can turn off and on existing layers. You turn them off and on by clicking on the individual layer. Active layers will have a yellow line on their edge.
Please note that to bring in shapefiles, they must be zipped before uploading into your account.
Once you have imported a KML, KMZ or shapefile, you will see the files available when you click on the Layers icon. Please note that the layers available to you only appear when their location matches the map view. To make a particular layer active, first click on the KML, KMZ or shapefile you want to work with. These files are organized in a parent-child hierarchy and all of the available files will open when you click the main file name. As you mouse over any file, you'll see a red line indicating where you are hovering. Click the file you wish to make active. As you make any of these files active, you'll see color coded entries appear on the map, indicating that a particular layer is active. Click the files to turn them off or on.
You can re-arrange the order in which any KMLs, KMZs or shapefiles appear in the Layer section. Simply drag-and-drop them in the order in which you prefer them to appear.
To see any labels associated with a KML, KMZ or shapefile, first make the layer active. Once active and displayed on the map, you can right-click anywhere on the layer on the map to reveal the label. The label will stay active until you right-click it again to turn it off.
Note: when sharing videos or still images, if you want viewers to be able to see your layers on the map with the video or image, be sure to turn the layers on before you create the link for sharing.
Tools Available with Google Maps
Map tools on the upper right of the map window:
- Center the map based on the location of the camera. If a moving map is desired, clicking the crosshair/circle icon will center the marker and the map then moves. If the path extends beyond the edges of the map (i.e. zoomed way in) the moving map/centered marker functionality is turned on, keeping the marker within view.
- Zoom the map to the video path. If the map has been panned around and you want to zoom to the path, clicking the zoom icon will zoom and center the map on the path.
- Change the map or add a layer by clicking the stack icon in the top right corner.
Map tools on the lower right of the map window:
-
Zoom in or out on the map using the + and – buttons
At any time, you can also drag the map around, using your mouse, to reposition it.
